I was trying to be very careful when picking the name of the website.  You only get one shot at something like this and I wanted to make sure that it embodied the goal of the website.  Let me explain.

“The Study of” from “The Science of”

One of my earliest influences in understanding hitting was and still is “The Science of Hitting” written by Ted Williams.  I wanted the name of the website to pay homage to that book.  Not just for what it taught us about hitting but more importantly for the process that Ted Williams took when it came to hitting.  He wanted to understand hitting and the swing more than anyone in his time.  It’s that same process of exploration and learning that drives this website.

“Study”

The main reason for using the word study was to acknowledge the fact that we know so little about hitting and that every day there is an opportunity to gain a better understanding of hitting and the athletes in the batters box.  It’s a continual process of gaining information and insight as well as re-evaluating what we already “know” about hitting.  As John Wooden said, “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

Hitting NOT Swinging

I love to look at swings as much as other coaches.  However, I purposely chose the word hitting because there is so much more to hitting than just the swing.  Is the swing important?  Absolutely.  But we have to remember that a swing happens in context of the entire situation (timing, pitch location, movement, perception, approach, etc.).  I wanted this website to encompass everything that a takes place in the one-on-one battle between the pitcher and the hitter.  In my opinion “hitting” encompasses that, but “swinging” does not.

So that’s the story behind the name of the website.  Maybe the name isn’t really that important but as you’ll find out, to me, everything is important.
